Many of our sinful nature and sin comes from our distorted view of loving ourselves. We love ourselves based on how we are loved by the world not by how much Jesus loves us. Self love, self loathing messes with our minds and takes us further away from God and deep into the darkness. Friends, We love ourselves because Jesus loved us first and gave His life for us. He called us the temple of God not to be defiled. Therefore we have to care and love ourselves. Not just the body but our soul and spirit. It builds confidence and love for our neighbours.
As Jesus loved us, we need to love the same way; right the wrongs we have done, pull our neighbours from harms way and honor them humbly. We are asked to do good and forgive them as we are forgiven by God. We have to be willing to sacrifice as Jesus sacrificed for us.
So. The first question here is do you love yourself? There is a self-love that is self-absorbed and is willing to do anything to be happy and self-satisfied. This love looks at others and feels jealousy, anger and even hate.
And then there is a self-love that cares for our soul, spirit and body. A self-love that is at peace with God and so able to reach out to our neighbors. There is no fear of our final destiny and most of all we know who we are. Only when we are at that point in our life, can we love our neighbors with a sincere heart and truly want the best for them. In many cases, we may have to deny ourselves for the good of others.
But before all that can happen and we say yes I have that kinda of love for ourselves, we need to ask the next question: who are we?
